A Feng Shui compass is called a Luopan. Its design is complex and intricate, taking into account the influences of earth, man and the cosmos. Calculations are made based on measurements taken with the Luopan. The readings and calculations describe the quality of Chi or energy to be found at a particular place and how this Chi affects the inhabitants.

The next step is to find ways of utilising the beneficial Chi and reducing or avoiding the harmful Chi. This, in a nutshell, is the task of the Feng Shui Practitioner.
